About The Costs of Research

How is research financed?

Although affiliated with KPNW, CHR is mostly funded through federal grants and other external funding. CHR is an organization that relies on “soft money,” which means it relies on funding from governments and organizations for a research project or other special purpose. This means that individual grants for research projects fund the operating cost of the research center. KPNW supports only about 10% of CHR’s budget.

What are direct study costs and what do they cover?

Research projects need to pay for direct study costs, which include both labor and materials costs incurred by the research activities. Direct study costs pay for data analysis; lab tests; recruitment personnel time and materials; protocol oversight; and project manager time to administer the project budget, handle contracts, and handle IRB submissions, and oversee day-to-day project activities.

What are indirect costs and what do they cover?

In addition to covering direct project costs, research projects must cover the cost of indirect support, which includes facilities' costs, administration activities, information technology, accounting, and crucial compliance activities that ensure that the project complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.

Why do CHR’s indirect rates differ from other organizations?

Indirect rates vary across institutions based on organizational structure. Some organizations are able to subsidize certain types of projects with institutional funds, but because of CHR’s structure, our indirect rate must be constant across all projects.
