Implementing Research in a Clinical Environment

What approvals are needed from KP and/or CHR?

The number of approvals will depend on the type and scope of your KPNW research activities. At a minimum, CHR needs to approve all research activities conducted at KPNW. To make sure that the research is feasible, legal, and ethical, the CHR Director and the following CHR departments approve proposed research: Compliance, Science, and Finance. We have staff that will help you get the appropriate approvals (see Getting Started & Contacts for information on who to call).

In addition, KP administration and those affected in the medical practice review and sign off on the research or quality initiative. This ensures that the department can accommodate the study. Specifically, doctors who are going to run a research study need approval from the department chief and MD requests for research time must be approved by the department chief and NWP. Other approvals may also be required from various clinical departments.

What should I do if someone from another institution is interested in conducting research with me at KPNW?

Do not sign any contracts or make any promises of access to KPNW data or resources. Get a copy of the proposed study with a detailed description of what activities are proposed to be conducted at KPNW. Take this study material to David Mosen, RRT for a consultation.
